The challenge
The Snow Centre in Hemel Hempstead is London's premier indoor snow sports destination — a 160-metre real-snow slope attracting thousands of skiers and snowboarders each year. As a high-activity, high-footfall leisure venue, the site has demanding health and safety requirements: slope incidents, near-misses and equipment accidents must all be captured clearly and reviewed quickly. The existing CCTV was significantly outdated — low-resolution cameras that struggled in the lighting conditions of an indoor snow environment, unreliable recording and no remote access. In a venue where a serious incident could result in a liability claim or an H&S investigation, the quality of camera evidence was not good enough.
What we did
SEG Core carried out a full site audit, assessing camera positions, coverage blind spots, lighting conditions and the specific viewing requirements of the operations and safety teams. Verkada's 4K cameras deliver exceptional clarity even in low-light and high-contrast conditions — critical where bright snow surfaces and darker peripheral areas defeat lesser cameras. Coverage spans the 160-metre slope, the lesson slope, lift stations, the Lodge Bar and Kitchen, equipment hire, reception and all public-facing spaces. A dedicated live feed streams the main slope into the Lodge Bar for guests to watch the action on the hill.
The outcome
The Snow Centre now has CCTV fully fit for purpose: crystal-clear 4K footage across every key area, accessible remotely at any time, capable of providing the evidence quality required for H&S investigations and insurance purposes. The operations team has complete confidence that every area of the slope is covered.
